AdBlue Diagnostics & Repairs Dublin
Has your car developed an AdBlue warning, SCR fault or a message telling you the vehicle will not restart after a certain number of kilometres?
BNT Autos provides AdBlue system diagnostics and repairs from our garage in Baldoyle, Dublin 13.
Modern AdBlue systems contain pumps, sensors, injectors and electronic components, so the warning does not always mean the vehicle simply needs more AdBlue. We diagnose the actual cause of the fault before recommending repairs.

What is AdBlue?
AdBlue is used in many modern diesel vehicles to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions. It is important to make clear that AdBlue is not a diesel fuel additive.
It is stored in a separate tank and is injected into the exhaust system as part of the vehicle's Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR, system.
When something goes wrong within the AdBlue or SCR system, the vehicle can display warning lights, fault messages or a countdown until the engine will no longer restart.
Common AdBlue problems
- AdBlue warning light
- SCR system fault
- Engine management light
- AdBlue system malfunction
- “No restart in…” warning
- AdBlue level warning even after filling
- NOx sensor faults
- AdBlue pump faults
- AdBlue injector faults
- Level sensor faults
- Wiring or electrical faults
- AdBlue crystallisation
AdBlue warning after filling the tank
If you have filled the AdBlue tank but the warning light remains on, the issue may not be the AdBlue level itself. Possible causes include:
- Faulty level sensor
- AdBlue pump fault
- NOx sensor problem
- SCR system fault
- Injector problem
- Wiring or communication fault
Diagnostic testing is needed to identify the problem correctly.
“No restart in…” AdBlue warning
Some modern diesel vehicles display a countdown showing the distance remaining before the vehicle will no longer restart. This can appear when the AdBlue system detects a serious emissions fault.
It is important not to ignore this warning. Once the countdown reaches zero, some vehicles may refuse to restart until the fault has been repaired and the system correctly reset.
BNT Autos can diagnose the cause of the countdown and advise on the repair required.
AdBlue diagnostics
Modern AdBlue systems are controlled electronically and contain several components that must work together. Depending on the vehicle and fault, BNT Autos can investigate:
- AdBlue system fault codes
- SCR system operation
- NOx sensor readings
- AdBlue pump operation
- AdBlue injector faults
- Tank level sensors
- Temperature sensors
- Electrical wiring faults
- Communication faults between control modules
The objective is to identify the faulty component rather than replacing parts unnecessarily.
NOx sensor problems
NOx sensors monitor nitrogen oxide levels within the exhaust system and play an important role in the operation of the SCR and AdBlue system.
- Engine management light
- AdBlue warning
- SCR system fault
- No-restart countdown
- Increased emissions
Proper diagnostic testing is required before replacing a NOx sensor because similar warning messages can be caused by other components.
AdBlue crystallisation
AdBlue can sometimes crystallise around injectors, pipes or other parts of the dosing system. This can restrict the system and cause warning lights or poor operation.
Where appropriate, the AdBlue system should be inspected to determine whether crystallisation is contributing to the fault.

AdBlue FAQs
- Why is my AdBlue warning still on after filling it?
- The warning may be caused by a sensor, pump, injector or SCR system fault rather than a low AdBlue level.
- What does “No Restart In 500km” mean?
- It means the vehicle has detected an AdBlue or emissions-system problem. If the issue is not resolved, the vehicle may eventually prevent the engine from restarting.
- Can an AdBlue fault cause an engine-management light?
- Yes. Faults within the SCR, NOx sensor or AdBlue system can trigger the engine-management light.
- What is an NOx sensor?
- An NOx sensor measures nitrogen oxide emissions and provides information to the vehicle's emissions control system.
- Is AdBlue added to the diesel tank?
- No. AdBlue has its own separate tank and should never be added directly to the diesel fuel tank.
- Can you diagnose AdBlue faults?
- Yes. BNT Autos can investigate AdBlue, SCR, NOx sensor and related electrical faults.
