The timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshaft turning in step so the valves and pistons never meet. If it snaps in service, the damage to the engine is usually severe and far more costly than the belt job. Because the water pump is often driven by the same belt and sits behind the same covers, it is normally replaced at the same time along with the tensioner and idlers — one labour charge instead of paying for the same strip-down twice.
Some modern engines use a wet belt, a timing belt that runs inside the engine in oil. It has its own interval and its own failure mode, and we inspect and replace these to the correct specification. When to think about the timing belt
- The interval is due by age or mileage
- Whichever comes first is the one that counts. A low-mileage car can still need a belt because the rubber ages regardless of use.
- No record of it ever being changed
- If you bought the car used and the history does not show a belt change, assume it is due until proven otherwise.
- Rattling or whirring from the belt end of the engine
- Noise from the timing cover area can mean a failing tensioner, idler or water pump bearing.
- Coolant loss or a leak near the belt covers
- A weeping water pump can soak the belt, and coolant contamination shortens its life dramatically.

- How do I know when my timing belt is due?
- It depends on the engine. Manufacturers specify an interval in both kilometres and years, and the earlier of the two applies. Tell us the make, model and engine and we will confirm what is specified for yours.
- What happens if the belt snaps?
- On most modern engines the valves and pistons collide, which usually means serious internal damage and a repair bill far higher than a planned belt change. That is why the interval is worth respecting.
- Should the water pump be replaced at the same time?
- If it is driven by the timing belt or sits behind the same covers, yes — the labour is largely already being done. Replacing it later means paying for the same strip-down twice.
- Does my car have a belt or a chain?
- It varies by engine, and some newer engines use a belt that runs in oil. We will confirm which applies to your vehicle and what its interval is.
- Are there warning signs before a belt fails?
- Often not, which is the problem. Sometimes there is a rattle from a failing tensioner or a coolant leak from the pump, but belts can fail with no notice. Replacement is based on the schedule, not on symptoms.
- How long does the job take?
- Most timing belt and water pump jobs take the best part of a day, and some engines need longer because of access. We will confirm when you book.
- How do I know if my timing chain needs replacing?
- The usual warning is a rattling or metallic noise from the engine, often loudest on start-up or when cold. A stretched chain or worn tensioner can also bring on the engine management light, timing-related fault codes, rough running, hard starting or a loss of power. We inspect the vehicle and carry out diagnostics before deciding whether the chain, tensioner or guides are at fault.
- What is a wet belt and why does it fail?
- A wet belt, or belt-in-oil timing belt, runs inside the engine and is lubricated by the engine oil rather than sitting outside behind covers. The belt material can deteriorate with age, and small particles can enter the oil and restrict the oil pickup or lubrication system. Incorrect oil specification and extended service intervals make that more likely, which is why these engines need their own attention.
- Does my car have a timing belt, timing chain or wet belt?
