Frequently asked questions

Do shock absorbers have to be replaced in pairs?

It is strongly advisable. A new damper on one side and a tired one on the other gives uneven grip and handling across the axle, so we normally recommend replacing them as a pair.

Will worn suspension fail the NCT?

It can. Excessive play in joints, leaking shock absorbers, broken springs and perished bushes are all things the test examines. It is worth checking before your appointment.

How do I know if I need alignment or new parts?

Alignment corrects the angles of the wheels; it cannot compensate for a worn joint or bush. We inspect the components first, then align once anything worn has been replaced.

Can a pothole damage my suspension?

Yes. A hard impact can bend a wheel, damage a tyre, disturb the alignment or damage a damper or wishbone. If the car feels or sounds different after a heavy hit, have it checked.

Why is one tyre wearing on the inside edge?

That pattern usually means the alignment is out or a suspension component has developed play. Fitting a new tyre without fixing the cause will just wear the new one the same way.

Is it dangerous to drive with a knocking suspension?

It depends on what is knocking. Some noises are minor, but a worn ball joint or a broken spring can be serious. Because you cannot tell by sound alone, it is worth having it inspected.
