Clutch and Gearbox Repairs at BNT Autos, Baldoyle, Dublin 13

About this service

The clutch connects the engine to the gearbox, and like brake pads it is a wearing item. The gearbox itself is built to last far longer, but bearings, synchros, linkages, mounts and fluid all age — and on automatics and DSG units, electronic and hydraulic control adds another layer to investigate.

Because clutch and gearbox symptoms overlap, diagnosis matters. A juddering take-up, a crunch into second or a whine at speed can each come from a different component, and the repair cost varies hugely between them. We check before recommending anything, so you are not paying for a gearbox when a linkage or a slave cylinder was the problem.

We inspect, repair and replace clutch systems using quality parts, and we diagnose manual and automatic transmissions for cars and vans. Where a repair is uneconomic on an older vehicle we will tell you honestly so you can weigh it against the value of the car.

Symptoms of clutch and gearbox trouble

Clutch slipping
Engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate as it should, especially uphill or under load. Usually a worn friction plate.
Heavy, high or vague pedal
A pedal that has gone stiff, bites right at the top or feels spongy often points to the release mechanism, cable or hydraulics.
Juddering as you pull away
Shuddering at take-up can be a contaminated clutch plate, worn dual-mass flywheel or failing mounts.
Crunching or refusing to engage a gear
Difficulty selecting first or reverse, or a crunch changing up, suggests worn synchros or an adjustment problem in the linkage.
Noises that change with the clutch pedal
A rumble or whine that alters when you press the pedal usually points to release or input shaft bearings.
Automatic slipping, jolting or delayed drive
Hesitation before drive engages, harsh shifts or slipping under acceleration need diagnostics on both the hydraulics and the control system.
Fluid leaks and burning smell
Red or brown fluid under the car, or a burning smell after hill starts and heavy traffic, both need investigating.

How the work is carried out

  1. Step 1

    Tell us how it behaves

Slipping, juddering, noise, or trouble selecting a specific gear — the detail steers the diagnosis and the likely cost.

  2. Step 2

    Road test and inspection

We drive the vehicle where safe, check the hydraulics, linkage and mounts, and scan the transmission on automatics and DSG units.

  3. Step 3

    Estimate and options

You get the cause, the repair options and the price. On older vehicles we will be straight with you about whether it is worth doing.

  4. Step 4

    Repair carried out

Once approved, we complete the work with quality parts, replacing related wear items while access allows so you are not paying twice for the same labour.

  5. Step 5

    Test and handover

We road test the car, check for leaks and hand it back with advice on bedding in a new clutch.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a clutch last?
There is no fixed figure. Town driving, towing and heavy traffic wear a clutch much faster than steady open-road use, so some last well past 150,000 kilometres and others far less. How the car is driven matters more than the mileage.
Can a clutch be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes the fault is in the hydraulics, cable or adjustment rather than the clutch itself, and that is a much smaller job. If the friction plate is worn, replacement is the only reliable fix. We check which it is first.
Do I need a new flywheel with the clutch?
Only if it is worn or a dual-mass unit has excessive movement. We inspect it while the gearbox is out and advise, because replacing one later means paying for the same labour twice.
How long will the car be off the road?
Clutch replacement is typically a full day and sometimes longer depending on the vehicle and parts availability. Gearbox work varies more. We give you a timeframe with the estimate.
Is a slipping clutch dangerous?
It is more a reliability risk than an immediate safety one, but it will worsen, it can leave you unable to pull away on a hill, and continued driving can damage the flywheel and add to the cost.
My automatic jolts between gears. Is that always the gearbox?
Not necessarily. Fluid condition and level, sensors and control faults can all cause harsh or delayed shifts. Diagnostics tell us whether it is electronic, hydraulic or mechanical before anything is dismantled.
