Brake Repairs at BNT Autos, Baldoyle, Dublin 13

About this service

Braking components are designed to wear. Pads wear against discs, discs thin over time, and fluid absorbs moisture which reduces its effectiveness. How quickly that happens depends on your driving: stop-start traffic around Raheny and the coast road wears pads far faster than steady motorway miles.

At BNT Autos we check pads, discs and brake lines for wear and performance issues and replace parts as needed. We measure rather than guess, so if your discs are still within limits we will skim or leave them alone rather than sell you parts you do not need.

Brake work is also one of the most common NCT items, so if your test is coming up it is worth having the system looked at as part of your preparation.

Warning signs in your braking system

Squealing or grinding
A high-pitched squeal often means the pads are near the end of their life. A harsh grinding noise usually means metal-to-metal contact, which damages the discs.
The pedal feels soft or spongy
Air or moisture in the system, or a fluid leak, can reduce how firmly the brakes bite. This needs checking promptly.
The car pulls to one side when braking
Uneven braking usually means a sticking caliper, a collapsed hose or unequal pad wear across the axle.
Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel
Warped or unevenly worn discs cause a pulsing you can feel, particularly when braking from higher speeds.
Longer stopping distances
If the car takes noticeably further to stop than it used to, the friction material, discs or fluid may all be past their best.
Handbrake will not hold
A handbrake that pulls high or lets the car creep on a hill needs adjustment or repair, and it is an NCT test item.
Brake warning light
This can indicate low fluid, a wear sensor or a fault in the ABS system, all of which should be diagnosed.

  • · Handbrake travel and operation checked

How the work is carried out

  1. Step 1

    Describe what you have noticed

A noise, a pull, a vibration or a soft pedal each point somewhere different, so tell us what changed and when.

  2. Step 2

    Wheels off, full inspection

We measure pads and discs and check calipers, hoses and fluid rather than judging by eye.

  3. Step 3

    Findings and estimate

We tell you what is worn, what is legal but close, and what it costs to put right. You approve the work before it starts.

  4. Step 4

    Replacement with quality parts

Brake components are replaced in axle sets where appropriate so braking stays balanced side to side.

  5. Step 5

Bleed, bed in and road test

We bleed the system where needed and road test the car to confirm the brakes are quiet, even and progressive.

Frequently asked questions

How long do brake pads last?
It varies enormously with driving style and conditions — anywhere from around 30,000 kilometres in heavy town traffic to well over double that on steady runs. We measure the remaining material so you know where you actually stand.
Do discs always need replacing with the pads?
No. If the discs are above the manufacturer's minimum thickness and the surface is in good condition, new pads on existing discs are fine. We measure them and tell you either way.
Is it safe to keep driving with squealing brakes?
A light squeal is a warning to get them checked soon. Grinding, a soft pedal or a car that pulls under braking should be looked at straight away, because stopping performance is already affected.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Most manufacturers recommend every couple of years because the fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and affects pedal feel. We check the condition at service and advise.
Can you do brakes the same day?
Usually yes for common pad and disc replacements. Less common calipers or hoses may need parts ordered, and we will tell you when you call.
Why is my handbrake an NCT item?
The test measures parking brake efficiency on rollers. A cable that has stretched or a rear brake that is not adjusting properly can fail even when the foot brake is fine.
