Pre-NCT Checks and Repairs in Baldoyle
A pre-test inspection of the items the NCT examines, with repairs carried out before your appointment or after a failure.

About this service
A pre-NCT check is an inspection that mirrors the areas the test examines. We work through lights, tyres, brakes, emissions, steering, suspension, wipers, mirrors, seat belts, dashboard warning lights and general body condition, then give you a report of anything that is likely to cause a fail or an advisory.
Cars over four years old need an NCT every two years, and vehicles ten years or older are tested annually. Driving without a valid certificate can mean fines and penalty points, so it is worth going into the test knowing where you stand rather than hoping for the best.
The value is mostly in the time and money it saves. Repairs found in advance can be done in one visit; the same faults found at the test centre mean rebooking, driving back and often a retest fee. We cannot promise or guarantee that any vehicle will pass the NCT — that decision belongs to the test centre — but we can make sure the obvious problems have been dealt with beforehand.
If your car has already failed, bring the failure sheet to us. We will work through the listed items, carry out the repairs and get the vehicle ready for the retest.
Common reasons cars fail the NCT
- Lighting faults
- Blown bulbs, hazy or cracked lenses, incorrect headlight alignment and number plate lights are among the most frequent failures, and often the cheapest to fix.
- Tyres and wheels
- Tread below the legal limit, uneven wear from alignment or suspension problems, damaged sidewalls or mismatched tyres across an axle.
- Brake performance
- Worn pads and discs, imbalance between sides, corroded brake lines or a handbrake that no longer holds properly on the rollers.
- Emissions and exhaust
- Readings outside the limits for the vehicle, blowing joints, corroded sections or a noisy system.
- Steering and suspension wear
- Play in track rod ends and ball joints, leaking shock absorbers, perished bushes and knocking over bumps.
- Visibility and interior items
- Torn wiper blades, a chipped or cracked windscreen in the swept area, missing or damaged mirrors, and seat belts that are frayed or do not retract.
- Warning lights on the dash
- An illuminated engine management, ABS or airbag light will be recorded, so it is better dealt with before the test.
- Body and structural condition
- Sharp edges, insecure trim, corrosion in structural areas and damage from a previous knock can all cause problems.

Frequently asked questions
- What can I do myself before the test?
- Check that every bulb works, top up screen wash, replace worn wiper blades, set your tyre pressures and check tread depth, clear the boot and cabin so the test centre can access the spare and seat belts, and make sure the car is reasonably clean underneath. Bring your paperwork and make sure warning lights are dealt with.
- Will a pre-NCT check guarantee my car passes?
- No, and we would not claim otherwise. The NCT decision is made by the test centre. What a pre-test check does is identify and fix the faults we can see, which removes the most common reasons for failure.
- How far ahead of my test should I book?
- A week or two is ideal. That leaves time to order parts and complete repairs without rushing before your appointment.
- My car has already failed. Can you help?
- Yes. Bring the failure sheet from the test centre and we will work through the listed items, carry out the repairs and prepare the car for the retest.
- How often does my car need an NCT?
- Cars over four years old are tested every two years, and vehicles that are ten years or older are tested annually. Driving without a valid certificate can result in fines and penalty points.
- Do you do the NCT itself?
- No. The test is carried out at an official NCT centre. We prepare your vehicle for it and repair anything found, before or after the test.
